Role Description

Mercor is partnering with a leading AI lab to engage experienced visual arts professionals for a research project focused on improving AI understanding of artistic quality, authorship, and digital image representation. We are seeking Visual Arts (2-D) Criticism and Instruction Experts with backgrounds in teaching, curation, or art direction. Participants will apply their professional judgment to evaluate digital artworks and provide detailed artistic, contextual, and technical analysis. This remote opportunity is ideal for established practitioners who are passionate about both traditional art critique and the evolving intersection between art and technology.

Key Responsibilities

  • Analyze digital artworks and identify artistic intent, composition, and stylistic influences
  • Evaluate technical execution, originality, and overall artistic success
  • Distinguish authentic, human-made work from AI-generated imagery through detailed critique
  • Assess contextual presentation factors such as lighting, cropping, and digitization quality
  • Provide structured ratings and written feedback capturing both qualitative and quantitative insight
  • Contribute to a growing dataset that informs research on creativity, authorship, and digital image evaluation

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of professional experience as a college-level instructor in visual arts, curator, or art director
  • Demonstrated expertise in two-dimensional media such as illustration, painting, photography, or digital art
  • Proven ability to critique and grade artwork with depth, precision, and fairness
  • Strong writing and analytical skills, able to clearly express artistic evaluation
  • Familiarity with digital media, portfolio presentation, and emerging AI-generated art trends
  • A professional or personal portfolio that reflects artistic competence and discernment

Requirements

  • Fully remote and asynchronous — work from anywhere, on your own schedule
  • Minimum of 10 hours per week (more hours preferred)
  • Independent, project-based contract
  • Start immediately

Compensation & Contract Terms

  • $55 - $75 per hour , depending on experience and performance
  • Paid weekly via Stripe Connect
  • Structured as an independent contractor agreement
