- Position Summary
- Tanaq is seeking an Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) Safety Escort to provide UXO support to a Vegetation and Target Management Services project at Fort Anderson-Pinn-Hill (A.P. Hill), VA.
- The UXO Safety Escort will be primarily focused on anomaly avoidance. Candidates must meet the criteria for, and be competent in, the functions of a UXO-TI, and UXO-TII as defined by DDESB TP-18.
- This is a temporary, 100% onsite position at Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia. This position is contingent on contract award.
- Responsibilities
- Escort personnel who are not directly involved in UXO - related operations (e.g., personnel performing environmental monitoring) but have activities to perform within UXO/MEC hazard zones.
- Provide MEC reconnaissance and Anomaly Avoidance in and out of the range and at specific point(s) where radio relay system(s) will be positioned in coordination with Range Control. It is possible to encounter MEC outside the live wire complex.
- Locate subsurface UXO/DMM using geophysical detection instruments and navigate and interpret site maps using GPS or land navigation techniques.
- Coordinate with installation personnel and contractors to ensure safe execution of remote vegetation clearing operations during Vegetation Management Operations (VMOs) conducted in areas containing unexploded ordnance (UXO) or MEC hazards
- Inspect, certify, and verify Material Potentially Presenting an Explosive Hazard (MPPEH) and follow safety precautions of ordnance and marking MEC(s).
- Perform lock-out/tag-out procedures for EOD robotic operators to move/consolidate UXO and Discarded Military Munitions (DMM) deemed safe for transport.
- Operate transportation modes for UXO and construct protective works.
- Complete the 3Rs (Recognize, Retreat, Report) and DoD TP-18 training if not already completed and certified.
- Ensure strict adherence to explosive safety protocols and maintain site compliance with MEC standards during installation and removal activities, in coordination with installation personnel
- Follow safety and health provisions established in the approved Accident Prevention Plan (APP) for each site as well as the Safety and Health Program.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- May be required to assist in the preparation of paperwork and documentation related to site activities of work performed.
- Perform maintenance/calibration checks when needed on geophysical detection instruments.
- Assist in preparing an on-site holding area to temporarily stow munitions and explosives of concern (MEC) that have an acceptable risk of movement.
- Operate or assist with personnel decontamination stations, staging areas and perform site security functions.
- Requirements
- Qualifications and Experience
- 3 years of prior military EOD and/or commercial UXO experience in all phases of munitions response actions or range clearance activities, as appropriate for the contracted operation, and applicable safety standards.
- Prior experience in DIA and MEC operations using specialized safety protocols.
- Trained or willing to complete the 3Rs (Recognize, Retreat, Report) and DoD TP-18 training.
- Proficient in interpreting site maps and GIS data; familiarity with GIS tools.
MUST be proficient in the operation and troubleshooting of the following instruments and techniques
- -Schonstedt and/or Subsurface Instruments Ferrous Metal Detectors
- -Handheld all-metals detectors
- -Target re-acquisition using on-site GPS equipment
- Candidate must have valid driver’s license in good standing, HAZMAT endorsement preferred.
- Fluent in English (written and spoken).
- Must pass pre-employment drug screening and physical, OSHA physical, and applicable background check(s).
- Ability to obtain and maintain government clearance and access to client site.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future.
- Education and Training
- High-school diploma or general education degree (GED), or equivalent.
- Must have certificate of completion from a qualified UXO training course of instruction, or graduate of military Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) school PLUS 3 years of prior military EOD and/or commercial UXO experience in all phases of munitions response actions or range clearance activities, as appropriate for the contracted operation, and applicable safety standards.
- Must meet the minimum qualifications set forth for a UXOT Tech II as outlined in DoD Explosive Safety Board (DDESB) TP-18 minimum qualifications for Personnel Conducting MEC-related activities.
- Must have OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER training in accordance with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120 and current 8-hour annual HAZWOPER refresher.
- Must have an appropriate level of training and certification
- Physical Requirements
- Ability to walk /hike long distances, loading and unloading heavy equipment, and carrying/pulling equipment across unimproved terrain.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds on occasion and to stand, bend, kneel and walk for extended periods of time over rough terrain and while carrying field equipment.
- While performing duties, will often be exposed to outdoor weather conditions, including heat, cold, humidity, moisture, dusty, and/or noisy conditions.
- May enter areas containing toxic chemicals or chemical munitions or be exposed to moving machinery and/or mechanical parts.
- Ability to work at various project locations at Fort A.P. Hill, VA, as necessary.
