Located at the Electrical Engineering Building (J03) on the Darlington Campus Deliver technical support across lab and field operations, ensuring efficient workflows, quality data, and WHS compliance Base Salary HEO6, $103,185 - $111,237 p.a. + 17% superannuation About the opportunity The University of Sydney is welcoming applications for a motivated Technical Officer to join the team and provide teaching support across Technical Support Services (TSS) teams in the Engineering Analytical Facility and the School of Biomedical Engineering. The Technical Officer supports the daily operations of Engineering Analytical Facility (EAF) and the practical teaching activities in School of Biomedical Engineering. This role involves providing advanced analytical instrumentation training and maintenance, managing hazardous substances, and assisting with the development of lab-based teaching components, all while maintaining the best practices in workplace health & safety, compliance, and risk management. The Technical Officer will be primarily based within the EAF and closely collaborate with the Biomedical Engineering TSS team. This role requires applying strong technical expertise to plan and prioritise laboratory tasks, maintain effective communication with team members and stakeholders, and troubleshoot technical issues, contributing to a safe, efficient, and high-performing teaching and research environment Due to the business requirements of this role, the successful candidate will be required to work on-site five days per week. Your key responsibilities will be to: provide timely, sound, and effective technical support, training, and engineering advice to staff, researchers, and students prepare EAF and biomedical engineering teaching laboratories for experiments, practicals, and tutorials in accordance with engineering and safety protocols conduct qualitative and quantitative tests, recording and computing relevant data to support investigative tasks provide training on analytical instruments and offer technical advice on method development, troubleshooting, and data interpretation support the sustainable delivery of services and daily operations within the Technical Area stay up to date with best practices and innovations relevant to the Technical Area, and proactively integrate improvements into operations develop and maintain professional and peer networks to enhance the services and capabilities of the technical area manage daily laboratory safety matters including user inductions, risk assessments, and handling of hazardous substances prepare and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for equipment, and document servicing and troubleshooting activities to ensure safe and compliant operations. About you bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a relevant field, or an equivalent combination of relevant training and experience demonstrated experience supporting teaching or research in wet laboratory or PC1 lab environments, with PC2 lab experience desirable proven ability to operate, maintain, and provide first-level support and training for equipment such as SEM, GC-MS, HPLC, Flow Cytometry, Tensiometer, spectrometers, and particle/powder analysers skilled in preparing samples and solutions for analytical testing, and experienced in retrieving, cleaning, and analysing data from a range of instruments experience in front-line service roles with strong customer interaction skills, and desirable experience working closely with academics or researchers to support their work ability to build and maintain effective working relationships demonstrated experience implementing safety protocols and enforcing safe working practices in laboratory settings.
