What the client is looking for:

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Team Lawyer to join our client-focused and outcomes-driven Legal and Democratic Services team.

To be considered for this role, you must have the following experience:

All aspects of Adult Social Care law which includes Court of Protection Welfare Applications, Ordinary Residence Disputes and Section 21A Challenges within our People Team which also includes Children’s Social Care and Health.
Handling a legal caseload which may include complex and legally challenging matters, drafting complex and significant legal documents and engage in detailed negotiations with parties as appropriate .
Advise, prepare and conduct proceedings acting as an advocate for the Council at court, tribunals, inquiries and other statutory and legislative hearings.

The role:

As a Team Lawyer, you will report to the Group Lawyer – People and play a key role in delivering high-quality legal services across areas including Children’s Social Care, Education, Adult Social Care, Health, and Contentious Housing.

You will work closely with client officers, Elected Members, partner organisations, and stakeholders from across the public and private sectors, ensuring that the Council receives robust legal advice and representation.

What You’ll Do

• Manage a personal caseload of legal work, including complex and significant cases.
• Advise, prepare, and conduct proceedings on behalf of the Council, acting as an advocate at courts, tribunals, inquiries, and hearings.
• Draft complex legal documents and conduct detailed negotiations.
• Manage the instruction and use of Counsel and external lawyers.
• Provide specialist advice to clients to support the delivery of service objectives.
• Attend committees, panels, and officer meetings, offering expert legal input.
• Supervise, support, and mentor junior staff within the Division.
• Deliver training, briefing notes, and guidance to develop the knowledge of officers and Members.
• Contribute to continuous service improvement, ensuring efficiency, value for money, and high-quality outcomes.
• Build and maintain strong partnerships with stakeholders to enhance service delivery.



We are looking for someone with:

A current practising certificate as a Solicitor, Barrister, or Legal Executive.

Post-qualification experience in at least two of the following areas:
• Children’s Social Care
• Education
• Adult Social Care
• Health
• Contentious Housing

Experience providing legal advice on complex and significant matters.
Strong advocacy skills and experience representing clients in courts, tribunals, and statutory hearings.
Proven ability to draft and negotiate complex legal documentation.
Experience managing a significant caseload with minimal supervision.
The ability to supervise and mentor junior colleagues.
Strong communication and influencing skills, with the ability to guide decision-makers.
