About
Introduction: Are you a Qualified Secondary English Teacher (QTS) with a passion for Special Educational Needs (SEN)? Do you excel at engaging young learners (aged 11-16/19) in English Language and Literature, particularly those facing complex Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) challenges, helping them to re-engage with education and unlock their potential?
Randstad Education is actively partnering with specialist SEN/SEMH schools and Alternative Provisions across the Greater Manchester area to recruit a dedicated English Secondary Teacher for a long-term, full-time, term-time only position starting ASAP, with the potential for a permanent role for the right candidate.
Why This Role?:
- Direct Impact, High Reward: Make a profound, significant difference in the lives of vulnerable young people through the power of English, helping them to master communication, re-engage with learning, and build vital life skills.
- Competitive Compensation: Enjoy very competitive rates of pay, fully compliant under AWR (2011), with no hidden deductions.
- Unparalleled Support: Work with a dedicated consultant providing honest, positive, and trustworthy guidance to match you with the right school.
- Professional Growth: Access free accredited career and professional development training to continuously enhance your expertise in SEMH, SEND, and English pedagogy.
- Work-Life Balance: Benefit from a full-time, term-time only schedule.
The Opportunity: As an English SEMH Secondary Teacher in our partner SEN/SEMH schools and Alternative Provisions, you will:
- Specialised English Curriculum Design: Design and deliver tailored English Language and Literature lessons and interventions, meticulously following each pupil's Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) and behaviour management plans to address SEN/SEMH needs.
- Literacy & Communication Development: Proactively foster crucial literacy skills, supporting reading comprehension, written expression, and oral communication, essential for academic and life success.
- Advanced Behaviour & De-escalation: Expertly respond to challenging behaviours with advanced de-escalation strategies and proactively teach pupils emotional regulation techniques and positive coping mechanisms to ensure a calm and safe learning environment.
- Engaging & Flexible: Re-ignite pupils curiosity and passion for English through creative, flexible, and highly engaging teaching approaches that account for past educational disruption and diverse learning styles.
- Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team (e.g., therapists, social workers, support staff) and families to deliver comprehensive pastoral care and develop vital life skills alongside academic progress in English.
- Vigilant Safeguarding: Uphold the highest standards of safeguarding and child protection, given the inherent vulnerability of many pupils in SEN/SEMH and AP settings.
What You'll Bring: To effectively support students with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and contribute to a positive school environment, the following qualities and experiences are crucial:
- Qualified Secondary English Teacher Status (QTS): Essential UK QTS.
- Expertise in Secondary English Curriculum: Comprehensive knowledge of the National Curriculum for English at Key Stages 3 and 4 (and potentially Post-16).
- Unshakeable Patience & Resilience: Possessing patience, understanding non-linear progress and challenging behaviours as communication, remaining calm, and focusing on the child's needs.
- Profound Empathy & Non-Judgmental Stance: Approaching children with unconditional positive regard, understanding behaviours stem from trauma or unmet needs, and building trust.
- Mastery of Behavioural Support: Proactive behaviour management, recognising triggers, implementing plans, and utilising effective de-escalation skills.
- Flexible & Creative Educator: Highly adaptable, adjusting teaching methods, resources, and the learning environment to meet diverse needs, and innovating to make English accessible and engaging.
- Proven Experience: Proven ability to implement effective behaviour management techniques to foster a secure and supportive learning environment for all students.
- Enhanced DBS: Must have an Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or be willing to obtain).
