Consultancy Brief – Paper Packaging Optimization Expert Background We are a modern paper packaging factory seeking expert support to enhance efficiency, reduce waste, and ensure that all materials used are both fit for purpose and cost-effective. The facility manufactures a broad range of food-service packaging, including: • Paper cups - for coffee, ice cream, and hot foods such as chicken pots. • Paper boxes - burger, popcorn, and general Quick Service Restaurant (QSR) packaging. • Paper bags - in multiple sizes and designs. Current Situation The current team—though skilled in production—lacks deep technical expertise in paper selection and optimization. Key points: • Paper grades, GSMs, and sheet widths currently in use are based on internal recommendations. • A comprehensive expert review is required to confirm whether current material choices are optimal for both performance and cost. Objective To engage a Paper Packaging Optimization Consultant with extensive experience in cost-efficient paper design and manufacturing. The consultant will: • Audit current paper usage across all products. • Recommend ways to minimize design waste and over-specification. • Advise on suitable paper grades and GSMs for each packaging type. • Provide technical guidance for new packaging applications. Scope of Work Phase 1: Audit and Optimization Review of Current Practices • Assess all papers used across product lines (Cupstock, Kraft, FBB, Bond, etc.). • Examine GSMs, coatings, and sheet widths for efficiency and suitability. • Evaluate design layouts for waste reduction potential. Optimization Recommendations • Suggest alternative grades or GSMs to lower costs without reducing quality. • Identify opportunities to improve material yield and reduce waste. • Provide a practical, prioritized action plan with quantified savings potential. Deliverables • Audit report detailing findings and recommendations. • Optimized paper matrix (paper type, GSM, coating, width) for each product category. • Waste and cost-reduction summary. Phase 2: New Application Advisory Technical Support for New Packaging • Advise on suitable paper type and GSM for new packaging (e.g., biryani or jollof rice containers, nut boxes, etc.). • Recommend design structures and functional considerations. • Suggest potential suppliers or specifications. Collaborative Development • Work with the production team to validate new trials or sample runs. • Provide design improvements and feasibility checks. Deliverables • Specification sheets for each new packaging application. • Trial evaluation and optimization feedback. Expected Outcomes • Reduction in material waste and overall paper consumption. • Lower production costs through optimized GSM and grade selection. • Improved structural performance and consistency in all packaging. • Knowledge transfer to enhance the technical capability of the internal team. Engagement Details • Initial audit duration: 3–4 weeks. • Ongoing advisory: On a retainer or hourly basis as mutually agreed. Ideal Consultant Profile • Minimum 10 years’ experience in paper packaging design, converting, or material engineering. • Proven track record in QSR or FMCG packaging (cups, boxes, and bags). • Strong analytical ability to balance quality, functionality, and cost. • Ability to communicate recommendations clearly and quantify impact.
