Service Area: Environmental Services / Grounds Maintenance
Reports to: Area Supervisor

Role Overview
This role involves undertaking outdoor grounds maintenance work within cemetery sites, requiring physical activity in all weather conditions. Duties include grass cutting, strimming, leaf clearance, and the handling of green waste. The postholder must be physically fit, capable of occasional heavy lifting, and willing to work across varying ground conditions.

You will support the Area Supervisor in delivering an effective, efficient, and high-quality grounds maintenance service. Following training, you will be expected to operate a range of horticultural power tools safely and competently.

Key Responsibilities
Work individually or as part of a team to deliver high-quality, customer-focused Environmental Services, including grounds maintenance, park keeping, street cleansing, and waste-related tasks as required.

Carry out grass cutting, strimming, leaf clearance, and general site maintenance to required standards.

Safely use horticultural tools and equipment, including 2-stroke strimmers, following training.

Maintain a strong personal commitment to high levels of customer satisfaction.

Act as a positive ambassador for the Council when engaging with members of the public.

Advise and encourage the public on environmental objectives, resolving day-to-day issues sensitively and professionally.

Work flexibly and cooperatively with other teams or crews to complete work schedules in the event of minor disruption or delay.

Ensure daily work schedules are completed efficiently and to specification.

Follow all health and safety procedures, safe systems of work, and risk assessments.

Undertake any additional duties consistent with the grade and responsibilities of the role.

Ensure compliance with all legal, regulatory, and policy requirements, including Health & Safety, GDPR, and the Employee Code of Conduct. Proactively identify risks, follow safe working practices, and escalate concerns where necessary.

Person Specification

Applicants must demonstrate how they meet the criteria below. These will be used to assess suitability for the role.

Essential Criteria
Qualifications / Experience

E1: Minimum of 6 months’ experience as a loader, sweeper, or grounds maintenance operative.

E2: Ability to carry out repeated moderate to heavy lifting, sweeping, and physical outdoor tasks.

E3: Demonstrates pride in work and applies strong customer care behaviours throughout the working day.

E4: Willingness and ability to achieve a nationally recognised qualification in grounds maintenance, cleansing, or waste management (e.g. NVQ Level 1 or equivalent).

E5: Ability to provide verbal reports and complete basic written records.

Skills & Abilities

E6: Willingness and ability to use computer terminals, handheld devices, and mobile phones.

E7: Ability to work effectively as part of a team and on own initiative.

E8: Ability to adopt safe working practices, with a working knowledge of health and safety regulations.

E9: Ability to adhere to the Council’s Equal Opportunities and “Dignity for All” policies, ensuring services are delivered in line with organisational standards.

Special Requirements

E10: Ability to obtain a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance at the appropriate level (Enhanced / Standard / Basic, as required).

E11: Ability to meet the requirements of the Baseline Personal Security Standard (BPSS).
