Located at the Services Building (G12) on Darlington Campus Lead WHS & environment programs across COS, driving contractor safety and continuous improvement Base Salary HEO9 $146,197-$154,260 p.a. + 17% superannuation About the opportunity The University of Sydney is seeking an experienced Operational Health, Safety & Environment Lead to join our team. This role will provide leadership and foster strong collaboration with key stakeholders across the University. The Operational Health, Safety & Environment Lead role sits within the Protective & Risk Services (PRS) unit of Central Operations Services (COS), reporting to the Operational Risk, Resilience & Compliance Manager. The position will lead, manage, and coordinate WHS and environmental programs and systems across COS, while driving contractor safety management initiatives and continuous improvement. Working closely with key stakeholders, the Operational Health, Safety & Environment Lead will develop, implement, and maintain COS-specific safety and environmental processes and procedures. It will also partner with Central Safety and other operational teams to review and embed improved, consistent practices. Success in this role requires strong collaboration skills, the ability to positively influence diverse stakeholders, and a commitment to fostering a proactive, safety-focused culture across complex work environments. Your key responsibilities will be to: lead the development, implementation and review of contractor safety management processes ensuring compliance with legislation operationalise end to end contractor safety management requirements including supporting pre-qualification, induction and ongoing assurance activities of suppliers provide appropriate training, mentoring & coaching to enable team members to effectively review job task risk assessments, safe work procedures and safe work method statements ensure contractor safety data is comprehensive, complete & accurate to ensure accurate reporting & analysis to provide insights to the COS Leadership team lead the implementation of Safety Management Programs and conduct regular onsite assurance activities operationalise safety and environmental programs and requirements in collaboration with key stakeholders prepare relevant safety submissions, briefings and reports for leadership, executive reporting, and local committees, highlighting key insights, challenges, and recommendations for continuous improvement lead and support incident response, investigation, and action management. champion a positive and leader led safety culture that encourages collaboration and continuous improvement. As such, we see the importance of recruiting talent aligned to these values and are looking for a Operational Health, Safety & Environment Lead who has: tertiary qualifications- in a relevant field such as Workplace Health and Safety or Environmental or equivalent combination of relevant training and experience excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with sound negotiating and conflict resolution skills and a demonstrated level of tact and discretion in dealing with a variety of matters demonstrated experience in dealing with contractors, procurement procedures and senior stakeholders demonstrated experience in the development, promotion and delivery of safety and well-being programs or interventions demonstrated highly developed analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to critically evaluate and analyse complex information and data to resolve issues extensive experience working in an operational safety role including managing serious or high-risk incidents and issues people management experience, including managing staff performance and development lead auditor certifications in OHS Management Systems ISO 45001 (desirable).
