Pay rate: Up to £42.14 per hour PAYE, TBC
Contract Type: Temporary, Anticipated 3 months
Working Arrangement: TBC

The role:

On behalf of a local council, we are seeking a Highways and Planning Lawyer to assist in the management of a group of lawyers in identified work areas according to business need, providing leadership, supervision, direction and expert legal advice to the Council, its members, officers and committees.



Key Responsibilities may include:

Work closely with our Planning, Highways, and Regeneration teams, supporting projects that shape the future of our communities.
Providing clear, robust legal advice on planning, highways, and related local government law.
Drafting and negotiating Section 106 agreements, highways agreements (Sections 38 & 278), traffic regulation orders, and other statutory agreements.
Advising and representing the council in planning enforcement, appeals, and judicial review proceedings.
Supporting committees, including Planning Committee, with timely and practical legal advice.
Working collaboratively with internal stakeholders and external partners to deliver effective outcomes.



What the client is looking for:

Solicitor, barrister or Fellow of CILEX who is eligible to practise in England and Wales and has (or be in a position to apply for)
a current practicing certificate issued by the relevant regulatory authority
Previous experience in planning and/or highways law
Previous Local authority experience is desirable but not essential—candidates from private practice with relevant expertise are encouraged to apply
Knowledge of planning, highways, and local government law.
Strong drafting and negotiation skills
Ability to manage a varied caseload under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
Excellent communication skills with the confidence to advise senior officers and elected members
