- We’ve got an exciting opportunity available for talented individuals to join our workforce as a Governance Officer.
- About the Role
- The Governance Services Team is at the heart of the Council’s democratic processes, ensuring that governance and decision-making arrangements are of a high standard in which councillors, citizens and other stakeholders can have confidence. We work closely with elected councillors and colleagues to ensure that the Council’s governance framework is transparent, effective, legally compliant, and supports robust and efficient decision making that contributes towards achieving the Council’s objectives. We are a proactive and forward-thinking team, integral to the Council’s current programme of improvement. The importance of good governance has a high profile within the organisation and this is an opportunity to be part of team that is valued and has scope to drive forward improvements in local decision making.
- We are looking for a Governance Officer to join our team, ideally with experience of working in a local authority democratic services environment and with knowledge of, or the ability to learn the law and procedures governing the conduct of meetings, council constitutions and school appeals; and confidence to put that knowledge into practice. Knowledge and experience in using the Modern.Gov committee management system would be desirable but is not essential. However, we will consider candidates with relevant transferable skills, and training will be provided for the right candidate.
- About You
The ideal candidate will have experience
- supporting the governance and administration of meetings in line with statutory and constitutional requirements, including agenda planning, producing agendas, attending meetings, providing procedural advice and writing clear and accurate minutes
- providing advice on governance issues to councillors, colleagues, partners and citizens
- supporting others to perform their role effectively within the governance framework
- developing and delivering training to councillors, colleagues and others involved in decision making
- identifying and implementing improvements to governance arrangements and getting involved with projects that contribute to local democracy
- supporting all aspects of the administration and clerking of school appeal hearings.
- The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills; and the ability to build effective working relationships with colleagues, councillors and partners, including dealing with the sensitivity of issues within a political environment so that they are able to act as a credible adviser to all councillors. We are a busy team working in a fast-paced environment and the ability to prioritise and organise their own workload in the context of tight deadlines and frequently changing tasks is essential.
- The majority of meetings are held during the day at the Council’s offices in Nottingham City Centre and attendance in the office for team collaboration is required at least one day per week. Working from home is supported on other days/times. Occasional travel to meetings in other locations may be required and the ability to drive with access to a car is desirable.
