- Job Description
- As a Functional Safety Engineer, you will join an established automotive electronics engineering team based in Milton Keynes, supporting the development of safety-critical systems for series production programmes. The role focuses on automotive Battery Management Systems (BMS) and associated embedded electronic control units, delivering full lifecycle functional safety activities in accordance with ISO 26262.
- You will work within a structured, process-driven environment collaborating closely with systems, hardware, software, and validation teams to ensure compliant and robust safety solutions.

Key Responsibilities
- Deliver ISO 26262:2018 functional safety work products in line with the Functional Safety Plan, with a strong focus on automotive BMS applications.
Develop and maintain core safety artefacts including
- Item Definitions
- Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment (HARA)
- Functional Safety Concepts (FSC)
- Functional and Technical Safety Requirements (FSR / TSR)
Lead and contribute to system-level safety activities in accordance with ISO 26262 Parts 4 and 6, including
- System design and integration safety requirements
- Hardware–software interface safety considerations
- Safety requirements allocation and traceability
Perform and review safety analyses, including
- Dependent Failure Analysis (DFA)
- FMEA / FMEDA
- Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) where applicable
- Support the definition and execution of integration, verification, and validation activities, ensuring safety requirements are fully verified.
- Own assigned safety work products through to completion of the Item Safety Case.
- Interface with suppliers and development partners, ensuring alignment and compliance through Development Interface Agreements (DIAs).
- Provide functional safety guidance to project teams across system, hardware, and software disciplines.
- Qualifications
Required Skills
- 3+ years’ experience in automotive functional safety engineering.
- Demonstrable experience working on automotive Battery Management Systems (BMS) or closely related electrified powertrain systems.
- Strong, hands-on knowledge of ISO 26262:2018, with specific experience in Parts 4 (Product Development at the System Level) and Part 6 (Product Development at the Software Level).
Proven experience producing and reviewing
- HARA
- DFA
- Functional and technical safety requirements
- Experience working within ASIL-rated systems (ASIL B to ASIL D).
- Ability to work effectively in a cross-functional, automotive project environment.
Required Qualifications
- A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, or equivalent military experience.
Desirable Skills
- Experience with embedded systems and safety-critical ECU architectures.
- Exposure to electric or hybrid vehicle powertrain systems.
- Experience supporting audits or assessments (internal or external) related to ISO 26262 compliance.
