About The Role: We are seeking a self-motivated individual to join our team as an Apprentice within the Research and Development group. In this position you will be embedded within our Dyno Facility, and you will take a hands-on role in developing our ability to sign-off safety-, performance-, and reliability- critical components for use on our race car. Reporting to a senior member of our technician team, your apprenticeship will provide periods of integration across the different areas of our dyno environment, and you will be mentored by the subject matter expert for each of these. You will learn the theory and practical skills to: Support with dressing of car systems such as gearboxes, hydraulics and brakes, and the installation of these systems into the relevant dyno test facility – for “business as usual” production sign-off as well as our “Virtual Track Test” events where we operate as if we are at the circuit. Servicing of the critical facility-side plant and systems such as the air handling units that are used to simulate on track running conditions, and the off-car rigs that support the car systems in the garage. By the conclusion of your apprenticeship, be able to take specific ownership of the testing of a system of the car in the dyno (as an example – this could be conducting performance testing and car pass-off testing of cooling system components in our thermal dyno). Key Skills to be Developed: Interpreting CAD models and technical drawings to British Standard 8888, to permit the build and assembly of systems for test. Theory and operation of each of the test environments within our world-class dyno facility. Track testing is becoming more and more limited, and so understanding how we replicate this at the factory is a critical way to add performance to the car. The application of sensors and instrumentation to ensure that we acquire high quality data during our experiments. Data analysis to enable the correct interpretation of information from our data acquisition / telemetry systems. Knowledge of the design and installation of components within the car that you are dressing, servicing and testing, which will include working closely with the relevant designer(s). Appreciation of the other areas of Research and Development, including supporting the needs within both our Test and Development Lab and Materials Lab at critical points of the year. The ability to work safely – both individually and as part of a wider team. As well as working in line with Departmental Risk Assessments, this also includes being proactive at highlighting and resolving concerns in line with our “See it, Say it, Fix it” culture. Candidate Profile Essential: A strong interest in the field of engineering, combined with a curiosity to understand mechanical systems. Every day is a learning day in Research and Development, so you will bring an open mind to collaborate effectively with your colleagues. We strive to be a team that consistently wins championships – to do so requires each of us to be self-driven, dependable and flexible. The ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner is essential – as are the confidence to put your hand up and ask when something is unknown or ambiguous, and the humility to admit mistakes when they arise. Benefits: When you put the effort in, we give it back. Start with a competitive salary, add in a world-class wellbeing programme (including a free on-site gym), delicious, subsidised food, and private medical cover - all on our state of the art factory powered by 100% renewable energy.
