Debt Markets Research Analyst - South Asia (Remote)
The Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) is a rapidly growing NGO/nonprofit think tank that conducts independent public interest research and analysis on financial and economic issues related to energy markets, trends and policies.
We are looking for an experienced credit research professional with deep knowledge of India's debt markets and hands-on financial analysis experience. They would be self-motivated, able to work independently, able to multi-task, set priorities and meet deadlines with limited direction while working remotely.
The ideal candidate would be located in India for effective stakeholder engagement. They must also possess a commitment to IEEFA's mission to accelerate the transition to a diverse, sustainable and profitable energy economy.

Roles and Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive credit risk analysis of energy sector companies, financial institutions, and climate-relevant infrastructure projects across India's transition landscape.
- Track and analyze debt raising activities by corporates, governments, and financial institutions, focusing on climate alignment, pricing gaps between green and conventional bonds, and general trends in emerging sustainable finance instruments in India
- Perform detailed financial statement analysis, cash flow modelling, and scenario analysis and stress testing to assess credit quality and climate-related risks in lending portfolios.
- Leverage climate risk scenarios developed by leading institutions such as NGFS and adopt for Indian context.
- Evaluate corporate capital expenditure plans against stated net-zero targets and assess alignment with India's national climate goals.
- Develop methodologies to evaluate companies based on their capex-to-climate target alignment across energy and hard-to-abate sectors.
- Write comprehensive credit research reports, market intelligence briefings, and analytical commentaries for publication on IEEFA's website.
- Build relationships with Indian financial institutions, regulatory bodies (RBI, SEBI, PFRDA, IRDA), credit rating agencies, and other stakeholders to engage on climate-related disclosure standards and present research findings to diverse audiences including investors, policymakers, and media.
- Collaborate with IEEFA's global team to provide India-specific insights on energy transition financing and debt market developments.
Required Qualifications or Attributes
- At least 5 years of relevant experience in credit analysis, fixed income markets, or debt capital markets with a focus on Indian markets.
- A degree in finance, accounting, or mathematics and/or with professional certifications (e.g. CFA/FRM) or appropriate and relevant market-oriented experience in lieu of those degrees.
- Strong understanding of credit risk fundamentals, including probability of default models, loss given default calculations, and rating methodologies and frameworks used by Indian and international rating agencies.
- In-depth knowledge of Indian debt capital markets, banking sector regulations, and financial institution landscape.
- Ability to assess how macroeconomic factors influence credit risk and market dynamics.
- Strong proficiency in quantitative analysis to support credit modelling and financial assessments.
- Excellent research aptitude and demonstrated ability to write high-quality analytical reports and market intelligence briefings.
- Strong organizational and project management skills with ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
- Self-starter who can work independently in a remote environment while collaborating effectively with teams.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Box, and ClickUp (or equivalents)with strong attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications and Skills
- Programming skills in Python, R, or similar analytical tools for enhanced analytical capabilities.
- Experience with sustainable finance, ESG analysis, or climate risk assessment methodologies.
- Familiarity with Bloomberg Terminal, Refinitiv, or other financial data platforms.

Compensation and Benefits
Full-time 12-month fixed-term employment contract with the option of extension by mutual agreement and market-competitive remuneration. Pay rates are based on education, skill, experience level and internal equity.
Work Schedule
Full-time, 5 days/week with occasional evening or weekend work as required. IEEFA is an international organization, so some late evening, early morning and weekend work will be required due to time zone differences and for on-site event coordination.
Travel
Some travel is required. All global team members attend IEEFA’s annual conference and regional or international team retreat.
Physical Demand and Work Environment.
Must be able to work for prolonged periods at a computer. Computer work can involve repetitive motion, eyestrain, back, and neck strain.
