Job Title: Bus Station Regulator
Location: Bridgend Bus Station and Porthcawl Bus Station (Bridgend County Borough Council)
Shift Pattern: 7 days a week (Monday to Sunday). The specific shift times are to be determined by the line manager.
Pay Rate: £13.47 per hour
About the Role
We are seeking proactive, customer-focused individuals to join the Communities Directorate as a Bus Station Regulator. This vital role ensures the effective and safe operation of Bridgend Bus Station, providing an essential service to the public and maintaining compliance with operational timetables and safety procedures. If you are physically fit, calm under pressure, and have excellent people skills, this is a chance to contribute meaningfully to public transport infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
Safety and Compliance
Station Security: Exclude unauthorised vehicles from both Bridgend and Porthcawl Bus Stations. Ensure all authorized buses, coaches, and inspectors' vehicles are properly parked.
Operational Monitoring: Carry out detailed 'departure monitoring programmes' including 'in station' and 'on bus' checks. Verify that supported council routes adhere to their published timetables and agreed stopping times.
Environment & Maintenance: Proactively maintain a clean and safe environment. This includes identifying and performing minor cleaning duties (e.g., picking up litter) and promptly reporting any damage, maintenance needs, or other problems to the Bus Station Supervisor.
Customer Service and Regulation
Public Assistance: Provide quality customer service and accurate service information to all users.
Incident Management: Effectively deal with all public queries, complaints, and instances of anti-social behaviour, maintaining a polite and calm approach in challenging situations.
Communication: Announce changes or deviations from timetables via the public address system, electronic signage, or hard records.
Operator Liaison: Maintain direct contact with bus and coach operators regarding day-to-day matters to ensure safe and efficient station flow.
Reporting & Record Keeping
Maintain clear records and statistics of all anti-social behaviour and other notable circumstances occurring within or around the bus stations.
Ideal Candidate
Communication & Diplomacy: Highly effective interpersonal skills with the ability to deal with the public and bus companies in a courteous, patient, and diplomatic manner.
Conflict Resolution: Proven ability to handle conflict and remain calm and polite at all times in challenging situations.
Health & Safety Focus: Knowledge of the Health and Safety at Work and Data Protection Acts, and strong awareness of Road Safety.
Physical Requirement: Must have the physical fitness to stand and work for long periods in adverse weather conditions.
Initiative: Able to work on own initiative, demonstrating a flexible approach to varying operational demands.
Essential Experience: A good standard of education (QCF/NVQ Level 2 equivalent) and previous customer service experience are essential.
