The successful applicant will be able to work with laboratory equipment and processes across the Blood Sciences disciplines (Biochemistry, Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Central Pathology Reception) whilst being primarily based within Central Reception.
Whilst full training will be provided, proven experience of working in a diagnostic pathology department and knowledge across a range of laboratory procedures will be advantageous. The successful candidates will be expected to participate in the 24hr shift system after suitable training. Continuous professional development (CPD) will be encouraged.
There may be a need for the successful candidate to change their usual working location to one of the other SWLP laboratories in the future. However, the vacancy is primarily based at Epsom Hospital.
The candidate will be primarily working within Central Reception handling the receipt, labelling and booking in of multi-discipline samples. This post will offer successful applicants the opportunity to support the Trusts out of hours Blood Sciences testing, coupled with other duties including preparing samples for analysis, inputting patient data and dealing with enquiries within Pathology specimen reception. This is a pan pathology post which is a new and innovative approach to delivering patient focused quality care.
Epsom and St. Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust is a large acute trust serving South West London and Surrey across two sites. The department supports a range of medical specialties including Accident and Emergency, Maternity, Paediatrics, South West Thames Renal and transplantation service and the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre.
Successful candidates will be required to undergo training and provide a service at any of the Trust sites. Candidates will be required to work early, late and night shifts over a seven day roster including Bank Holidays once fully trained and competent. The weekend and night duties will be paid at an enhanced rate.
South West London Pathology is an award-winning NHS pathology partnership set up by St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Croydon Health Services NHS Trust and Kingston Hospital NHS Foundation Trust to provide a single, integrated pathology service across South West London and beyond. On 1 May 2021, Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust joined to form an expanded South West London Pathology partnership.

To work in a designated area of the department under the supervision of a section leader but will organise own work tasks or activities.
To understand and perform work in accordance with the standard operational policies using basic theoretical knowledge.
Ensure that documentation is maintained to the SWL Pathology standard (including electronic records).
Be able to solve basic problems within work area and refer unresolved problems to a more senior member of staff.
To prepare specimens for diagnostic testing in Pathology specimen reception.
To contribute towards a culture of quality in the department and to comply and promote the quality initiatives within the department consistent with maintaining laboratory accreditation. To provide support to Biomedical Scientists within Biochemistry, Haematology and Blood transfusion labs.
