Randstad Student Support is seeking a highly professional and specialised individual to act as an Academic & Practical Support Worker for a student at Lancaster University.
This is a consistent, full-time role crucial for enabling the student's independence and autonomy within the higher education environment. We require a firm commitment to the regular 9:00am to 5:00pm schedule throughout the academic year.
- Location: Lancaster University (on campus)
- Schedule: Full-Time, consistent hours (Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM)
- Specialism Required: Training in emotional regulation.
Key Duties and Role Purpose:
The purpose of this role is to help the disabled student become more independent and autonomous by offering comprehensive supportive assistance across campus and in their studies.
Core Responsibilities (Independence Focused):
- Practical Mobility Support: Providing assistance to a student with a physical impairment in manoeuvring around the campus (e.g., opening doors, ensuring pathways are clear).
- Equipment and Materials Handling: Carrying books, IT equipment, or other study materials for the student.
- General Orientation: Providing orientation and guidance to help the student locate areas on campus, especially if their disability affects spatial awareness or orientation skills. (Note: This support should decrease over time as the student gains independence.)
- Social Access: Offering supportive assistance to ensure access to the wider aspects of student life (e.g., accessing college social spaces, joining groups).
- Direct Note-Taking: Providing specialised manual note-taking for lectures and seminars as required.
Support Management & Review:
- Liaise with the student to arrange locations and times, holding regular reviews to assess how well the support is working and strategise next steps for developing independence.
- Maintain strict confidentiality and communicate effectively with Randstad regarding the student's needs and any immediate concerns.
Specialist Requirements and Experience:
Mandatory requirements:
- Must hold a degree, equivalent qualification, or be working towards a degree (in final years).
OR
- Must hold 2+ years experience supporting Students/Adults with neurological differences
- Must hold specialist training or demonstrated expertise in techniques related to Emotional Regulation.
Required Skills and Experience:
- Experience of the Higher Education Environment: Familiarity with the university setting, including lectures, libraries, and campus facilities.
- Experience of Supporting Disabled Adults: Prior experience supporting disabled adults and/or students with complex needs.
- Effective Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Exceptional patience, empathy, and the ability to work effectively with others as a competent team member.
- Operational Skills: Good organisational skills, flexibility, and strong punctuality.
- Campus Knowledge: Knowledge of the Lancaster University campus (or a willingness to familiarise quickly).
